Murphy and Wall Beds

With the ability to be folded up into a wall, Murphy Beds have become the go-to choice for people living in small spaces. When not in use, the bed can be easily folded upright and disguised as a wall or wall cabinet, depending on the design of the bed.

A Murphy Wall Bed gives you an extra bedroom when you need it, with the freedom of a functional space for the rest of the year. It’s like adding a room to your home at a fraction of the cost.

Turn a small space into a smart space, from studio apartments to lanais and carriage homes.

Murphy Beds are changing the way people think about real estate, and improving the functionality of smaller spaces. More room for the things that matter.

Murphy Wall Beds give you extra accommodations without sacrificing space. Now you can host family and friends, and still have space for that home office, craft room, play room, theatre, or fitness studio.

History Behind a Murphy Bed

The Murphy bed was invented by William Lawrence Murphy in the early 20th century to save space in small, cramped living areas: Murphy was inspired to design a space-saving bed after moving to San Francisco and finding his one-room apartment too small to entertain guests. At the time, it was considered improper for a woman to enter a man’s bedroom, so Murphy designed a bed that could be flipped into a closet to create a parlor.

Murphy patented his design in 1911 and called it an “in-a-door” bed. He received additional patents for pivot and counterbalanced designs. The Murphy bed became popular in the 1920s as city life became more popular and space became more limited. Apartments advertised their Murphy beds, and hotels touted them as luxuries.

Design Evolution

Modern Murphy beds have been designed with hydraulic lifts and piston systems to make them easier to use. They also often include additional features like built-in lighting, charging stations, and customizable shelving.
